Video: Great Basin Saddlebag

Video overview of Giant Loop’s Great Basin Saddlebag. We pioneered the concept of the horseshoe-shaped, biomorphic motorcycle saddlebag design with our original Giant Loop Saddlebag, and the Great Basin was introduced in 2009 as a virtually universal soft luggage solution, fitting almost any motorcycle make/model designed to carry a passenger.

KTM 690 Enduro with Coyote Saddlebag Tours Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras

By | Blog, FAQ, Fitment, Giant Loop Gear, KTM, Saddlebags | No Comments

Recent email from customer Peter who rides a KTM 690 Enduro equipped with Giant Loop’s Coyote Saddlebag:

Dear All,

Fantastic gear, used recently on a quick Easter trip from Mexico D.F. to Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and back. 5,700 km on all kind of tracks, sometimes really bad (not on the photos as I rather focussed on getting through the rough passages).

No wear or tear, perfect fit and the equipment stayed in place, whatever the track was.

Aluminium boxes really are something I try to avoid.

I like your slogan “go fast, go light, go far”. That is the essence of my preferred travel style, too.

Best regards, Peter

Giant Loop Sponsored Rider Danell Lynn Sets New Guinness World Record: Longest Journey By Motorcycle In A Single Country

Giant Loop Sponsored Rider Danell Lynn Sets New Guinness World Record: Longest Journey By Motorcycle In A Single Country

Giant Loop is proud to announce that sponsored rider Danell Lynn has set a new Guinness World Record for “Longest journey by motorcycle in a single country.” Traveling for a year on her Triumph Bonneville equipped with Giant Loop gear, Lynn covered 48,600 miles while riding throughout the contiguous 48 states of the Unite States of America. Lynn is the first solo woman motorcyclist to hold the record.

Although her travels actually covered all 50 states, as well as three Canadian provinces, totaling more than 53,000 miles from September 2014 through September 2015, Guinness only counted the miles logged within the continental 48 states. Duplicate miles also did not apply to the record; each of the 48,600 miles covered different routes.

“Giant Loop was my first and only bag choice as the ride began its planning,” says Lynn. “I am so pleased with it all: The ease of use, and complete dryness of my gear through downpours, will keep me coming back to Giant Loop.”

“We are very proud to have played a role in Danell’s incredible journey,” says Harold Olaf Cecil, owner and founder of Giant Loop. “Daily use really puts our products to a degree of testing most riders would take many years to equal. Danell is also personally dedicated to positive change in the world, and her spirit matches our mission as a brand and company. Well done, Danell!”

For her world record setting ride, Lynn used Giant Loop’s Siskiyou Panniers, Fandango Pro Tank Bag, Tillamook Dry Bag, Rogue Dry Bag, Possibles Pouch and Pronghorn Straps on her 2006 Triumph Bonneville. She also secured her gear with Rok Straps and carried additional fuel in 2-liter Touratech Fuel Canisters, which fit into the front pockets of the Siskiyou Panniers.

Giant Loop Riders: 400-Mile “Lost Coast” Dual Sport Weekend on Honda CRFs with MoJavi Saddlebag, Klamath Tail Rack Pack, Pannier Pockets, Ochoco Enduro Tail Pack

By | FAQ, Fitment, Giant Loop Gear, Honda, Reviews, Riders, Saddlebags, Tank Bags, Uncategorized | No Comments

Cory and his buddies recently enjoyed an “epic” dual sport tour in Northern California!

Hello at Giant loop,

I thought I’d send you a few shots from our most recent adventure from the lost coast. Epic 400 mile two day ride with fantastic weather and terrain conditions. Thanks for the great gear. I put it through the ringer with brush, rocks, mud and an exit or two in the in a mud hole and on the gravel. Performed awesome. The waterproof liner for the Klamath tail pack fit perfectly and after several water crossings and a swim in the mud I opened it a the end of the day to find a puddle of water on top of the liner and my wallet, phone, and spare goggles dry as a bone. Look forward to lots more use as our riding season here on the lost coast is just getting started. You guys make it down this way and we’ll take you on a giant loop of our own.
Thanks again
Corey and the riders of the lost coast.

P.s. The pannier pockets with a 1.8 liter platypus hoser hydration bladder worked awesome, back up 1 liter on the other side. 1st ride without a pack on my back! It made a huge difference at the end of the day.

By | Giant Loop Gear, New Product | No Comments

We have tested the Mob Armor Smart Phone Handlebar Mount over thousands of miles now with an iPhone 6 in a LifeProof case, and it is BOMBER! The handlebar clamp fits virtually anything with handlebars, including bicycles (we’ve used it on our Rally Raid Honda CB500X Adventure and our KTM 500 EXC), and it installs in about 60 seconds. The Giant Loop Mob Armor mount handles all but the very most extreme riding (we finally managed to bump the phone out while riding with the throttle pinned in three-foot whoops on the KTM – if you’re riding like this, simply remove the phone from the mount).?The bar/bike mount is the perfect mounting accessory for quick and tool-less installation and removal on square, round, odd shaped rails and bars.?The clamp can open its jaws and grab anything between 0.75 inch to 1.5 inch (20mm to 40mm).

Giant Loop Gear: Practice Layering With The New Giant Loop Tech-Tee Long Sleeve Shirt As Functional Base Layer

By | Giant Loop Gear | No Comments

We pulled a page from the outdoor sports play book when we chose the new long-sleeve Giant Loop Tech-Tee shirt. The layering system is well know among the gravity and human powered riders. With base layer against the body giving vapor movement, insulation for trapping warmth in the second layer and, for the final layer, a vented or breathable outer shell to manage the environmental conditions. Our new Tech-Tee offers the functional benefits of a base layer, such as reduced chafing from gear, wicking action and quick drying, that a motorcycle rider would appreciate.

tech t shot w harold

While traveling in Norway last month, Harold wore his new Giant Loop Tech-Tee under his gear for his base layer. He also brought one for his moto-host, Elving Solli, to try. Elving was surprised the GL Tech-Tee worked so well under his riding gear and commented that he hadn’t tried a technical base layer while motorcycling, only long-johns. He loved how smooth the material was and enjoyed its quick drying nature.

Ride Must Go On

TolgaBasol

Hello , my name is Tolga Basol and I?m from Istanbul, Turkey. I’ve been working for the media industry in Istanbul about 14 years. I bought my first motorcycle about 12 years ago. Since then I’ve tried to travel with my bike to different parts of the world on my short holidays from work. I started to carry my video equipment on my travels & figured out how to shoot while traveling on a motorcycle. Finally i decided to quit my job to fulfill probably the biggest dream in my life; riding around the world on a motorcycle.

00002

Route

My journey will start from Istanbul on 1st of June 2014 on a KTM 1190 Adv R. I plan to ride through Russia, Mongolia, Siberia & then I will decide to continue to Southeast Asia or to ship my bike to North America. I will try to catch up Dakar 2015 in South America. Then I will decide the route for Africa. I suspect the route might change quite a lot but I will try to travel as long as I can & I did not set an end date for the trip.

00003

The idea behind my trip is simply ??Ride Must Go On??
KTM Turkey provided me with a brand new KTM 1190 Adv R. I bought the lightest & most compact equipment, kept my clothes to minimalistic & Giant Loop provided all the luggage I need for my journey. And now simply the Ride Must Go On.

Follow my page to track my journey real-time on the map & to check my photos & videos that i will try to share along the way.

She rode the Rally-Raidproducts.co.uk built “LC4-50”, equipped with Coyote Saddlebag, from Jolly Old England to the event in Greece. She raced the event with support from Torque Racing and now will be riding/camping it back home again. This is the big test for the KTM690 Enduro, turned into a 450cc Rally Replica with a specially designed conversion kit. The goal of the conversion kit is to give Privateer Rally Racers a stone reliable and easy to handle FIM and ASO legal rally bike. A bike that can be ridden all year, plus survive the rigors of racing Dakar, without requiring major service to the engine internals.

Giant Loop Tech Tip: Using A Fender Strap Instead of Fender Hooks For Mounting Mojavi Saddlebag or Coyote Saddlebag

By | Fitment, Giant Loop Gear, KTM, Tech Tips | No Comments

Problem:
The latest edition of KTM 350 and 500 EXC dual sports come equipped with a thicker and much stronger rear fender. This is to keep the taillight assembly from flexing into the rear tire during rough riding. This new design is an added benefit for those of us that like to carry loads strapped onto the back fender, but is a consideration when mounting a Mojavi or Coyote Saddlebag without using the included fender hooks. The issue is that our fender hooks are radius profiled for thinner fenders, like every other enduro or dualsport uses, and no longer clip onto current design KTM rear fenders.

Solution: Replace the hooks with the included mounting strap, by sandwiching the strap between the fender and taillight assembly, before mounting the bag. Then thread the mounting strap through the buckles inside the saddlebag.

This is done by unscrewing the taillight assembly(black plastic shown below) from the subframe and fender.

IMG_0405

IMG_0404

Once the strap is centered, re-tighten the screws and bolts that secure the taillight assembly. This should tension the strap under the fender, so it doesn’t slide around, providing a solid mounting position.

IMG_0403

Thread the mounting strap through the buckles and tension.

We use a spare side release buckle to hold the strap ends, when a bag isn’t mounted.

Giant Loop Racers: Cain’s Quest Race Team 7 SnoXscapes, Kirk and David, Finish On The Podium To Win $20,000, With Great Basin Saddlebags

By | Giant Loop Gear, Racer | No Comments

There was a strange knock at the email door, last Christmas season. ?It wasn’t the first time that a well researched and experienced long distance rider contacted Giant Loop for luggage solutions.

team7finish

Something was very different this time, since Canadian rider Kirk Hastings wasn’t outfitting a motorcycle and he wasn’t taking a trip across the Trans-Canada Trail, or riding the Haul Road to Inuvik, or traveling ?south to Ushuaia. He was building a Skidoo Freeride SNOWMOBILE for cross country racing.

team7 setup

Kirk had heavily researched a few vital components, for his and team mate David Price’s race machines, that he knew would give him the edge over race teams with conventional equipment. The issues he wanted to dial in were lighting, luggage and suspension. His requirements for the packing system were to carry 90 pounds of supplies and required safety gear. So, he began the search to find the best soft luggage on the market, for his race setup, and after looking at every luggage system on the planet, ?Giant Loop’s packing system became that solution. ?The benefits that Kirk wanted to experience were dry safety gear, loaded close to the center of his machine, in a bag that was easy to mount and remove, mounted in a way that didn’t interfere with the rider, upset the balance of the machine or overload its limited rear framework. ?While we have sold plenty of Great Basin Saddlebags, Diablo Tank Bags?and?Bushwacker Hand Guards?to motorcyclists for these very reasons, this is the first one destined for snowmobiles! The boys also found Pronghorn Straps to be very handy, keeping their gear secured tight.

Team7tech

It wasn’t just any little race, either, it was the 3300KM Cain’s Quest. Cain’s Quest takes place on the eastern Canadian coastline, in the region of Labrador, Newfoundland. The week long, 22 checkpoint, two rider team race starts in Labrador City. Then, the course runs out to the coast at Cartwright, across the coastal headlands and sea inlets to Nain, then back across land to finish in Labrador City. The racers ?cannot use any groomed or established trails and must navigate across the barren northlands, while dealing with extremely harsh winter conditions and carrying mandated safety equipment. Emergencies are regular and many, with 20 of the 29 teams entered ending their race with either a medical or mechanical. While a mechanical may not seem an emergency, ANY time spent with protective winter gear removed, to wrench and hammer broken bits back together, leads to frozen body parts. Frozen hands, feet and faces are the main concerns for racers, but crashing at speed has its own risks, with the constantly changing conditions, terrain and wind driven snows.

Link to some Elka Suspension test video from before the race.?The Great Basin Saddlebag looks solid and stable on that machine, as it rips the 2-3ft whoops, at 65mph. ?

Read the exciting wrap up to the race, in these?Cain’s Quest Facebook postings!?
I am sure our friends at Baja Designs and Elka Suspension were equally impressed with Team 7 SnoXcape’s finish of the 2014 Cain’s Quest.
Great Job Kirk and David!!

Giant Loop Review: Buckin’ Roll Tank Bag In Dirt Bike Magazine

By | Giant Loop Gear, Reviews | No Comments

Dirt Bike Magazine is usually on the top of our magazine pile, in the Giant Loop Library. We blogged about the Pronghorn Straps getting reviewed in their January issue. Now, in May’s issue, our all new?Buckin’ Roll is getting the write up, found in their Adventure, The Goods section.

BNR2 in may DB

The Buckin? Roll tank bag packing system from Giant Loop consists of three components, which can be used individually or in any combination: ?mounting harness, center tool case and Pannier Pockets. The system features water-resistant YKK zippers, Nylike webbing, reflective accents for visibility and are made in the USA.

Thanks DirtBike!

I still gander at Dirt Bike’s Feb coverage, reviewing the KTM 350EXC and Beta 450RS, having gotten a taste for Betas while in Italy last November, for Eicma. The Adventure section in that Feb issue also had an article called “DR Done Right”, about or friends at?Seat Concepts rebuild of their crusty old Suzuki DR650 into a proper big-bore 790cc dual sport bike with?Baja Designs?Squadron. Pretty cool project and reminds me that we has one of those “vintage air-cooled” motos in the GL stable, a late 90’s Honda?XR600R. Better not get too many ideas from that article…
