Waterproof: Sorting Fact from Fiction + Giant Loop’s Proven Design Approach

Giant Loop recently received this question on a popular adventure motorcycle forum:

“I would like a clarification regarding the Coyote Saddlebag. The old style with the zipper closure was not 100% waterproof because of the zipper (at least this is my understand from what i have read). The new roll top style, is it 100% waterproof? In case I skip the dry pods in the one with the roll top closure will the containing things remain dry? I understand the dry pods are used for sorting and storing purposes, but i am really seeking a waterproof solution.”

Let me clarify – and please feel free to share this info! First, to answer your specific questions:

This icon is Giant Loop's guarantee that a product is 100% waterproof under normal riding conditions when instructions are followed and included components are used as our designed waterproofing system.

This icon is Giant Loop’s assurance that a product is 100% waterproof under normal riding conditions when instructions are followed and included components are used as our designed waterproofing system.

The Coyote Saddlebag and Great Basin Saddlebag are sewn products, constructed with military-spec thread and waterproof material reinforced with ballistic nylon. Their outer shells are HIGHLY water resistant, and to make them truly 100% waterproof they include a set of 3 RF-welded Saddlebag Dry Pods with air purge valves. The Coyote Saddlebag Roll Top and Great Basin Saddlebag Roll Top outer shells are even more highly water resistant, because they are constructed with fewer seams. The Dry Pods are lightweight and don’t take up much space, so we would recommend storing them inside the Saddlebag even if you’re riding in dry conditions and don’t need them – then you’ll have them for deep water crossings, storms, etc. They can also be filled with ice and used as beverage coolers at camp, they’re handy shopping bags to carry food to camp, etc.

Now, there are multiple design approaches to achieve waterproofing in textile products, so  please allow me to geek out a bit here. I want to answer not only your question but also share some information motorcycle riders should understand about Giant Loop — and other gear and apparel.

Before I started Giant Loop in 2008, I used to be a gear reviewer for a national adventure travel magazine, so I despise inaccurate and exaggerated marketing claims. And I do crazy things like taking all of Giant Loop’s products to the city swimming pool to test them myself in a controlled environment. GL’s product designer is a through-hiker and international motorcycle traveler who has lived for months at a time in the outdoors, so he knows his game.

Sewn products made by any manufacturer are not 100% waterproof because needle holes can allow moisture to penetrate the seams. Riders who get water inside their luggage usually neglect to take bags off their bikes when they leave them parked in a heavy rain, allowing water to pool and slowly seep through a seam. In normal riding conditions water doesn’t usually collect and pool.

And there’s really no such thing as a 100% waterproof zipper except for the kind used on scuba dry suits – they are too costly and fragile to be a practical solution for motorcycling. On our zippered bags, the zipper itself is virtually never the point of entry for water unless the zippers aren’t closed or the storm flap isn’t rolled down over the zipper.

Our design philosophy is to build super rugged, tough, highly water resistant outer shells and protect the more fragile RF-welded (no needle holes, fabrics bonded together using heat) and seam-sealed (needle holes covered with waterproof tape) waterproofing components inside this shell.

So while a crash or cactus spine may poke a hole in the outer shell, all of the gear inside the Dry Pods included with our packing systems remains organized and well protected inside.

Because the outer shells on Giant Loop’s adventure proof gear are so highly water resistant, keeping contents dry inside can even be as simple as using a zip-lock or trash bag. Instead, Giant Loop’s Kiger Tank Bag, Fandango Pro Tank Bag, Diablo Pro Tank Bag, Coyote Saddlebag, Great Basin Saddlebag, Siskiyou Panniers and Round The World Panniers all include RF-welded or seam sealed waterproof inner liner Dry Pods.

And we offer many 100% waterproof RF-welded products as part of Giant Loop’s modular, customizable, adventure proof packing system: Columbia Dry Bag, Tillamook Dry Bag, Rogue Dry Bag, Torngat Tunnel Bag, Revelstoke Tunnel Bag, Possibles Pouch, GL Fender Bag — and the new MotoTrekk Panniers.

There’s also a lack of objective standards and transparency around claims of “waterproof.” Waterproof spans a range in practical reality, which is why there’s actually an international set of standards and ratings for waterproofing: the IP Code.

Submersible standards (IPX7 and higher) are critical for boating, diving, snorkeling, etc. Our RF-welded (no needle holes from sewing) are submersible waterproof – I use them for rafting and paddleboarding. These Giant Loop products do not require inner liner Dry Pods to provide 100% waterproof protection.

But since motorcycles themselves are not submersible vehicles, sewn products achieve a level of waterproofing equivalent to spraying the products with high pressure water jets from all directions (IPX6). Water may penetrate the outer shell in extreme conditions, but the inner liner Dry Pods keep contents dry inside.

When Giant Loop labels a product as waterproof, that means a product is 100% waterproof (IPX6 or better) under normal riding conditions when instructions are followed and included components are used as our designed waterproofing system.

When shopping for waterproof motorcycle soft luggage, waterproof apparel, etc., pay attention to construction details, so you can understand what a manufacturer is labeling waterproof, what degree of waterproofing is adequate for your application and how the waterproofing is achieved.

Thanks for riding with Giant Loop – and please keep the questions, comments, reviews, pics and videos coming our way!

2017 NIFTY 50 BEST NEW PRODUCTS – POWERSPORTS BUSINESS!

2017 Nifty 50 best new products award from Powersports Business Great Basin Saddlebag Roll Top

2017 Nifty 50 best new products award from Powersports Business Great Basin Saddlebag Roll Top

NEW 2017! Introducing the Great Basin Saddlebag Roll Top, a fresh update of the original biomorphic, horseshoe-shaped Saddlebag design that Giant Loop pioneered in 2009. The Great Basin Saddlebag Roll Top features a convenient rolling closure that seals out water and dust while maintaining all the unique “go light, go fast, go far” features of our zipper closure Great Basin Saddlebag.

Other enhancements include a greater range of compression and expandability (68 liters with one roll to seal out dust), sewn-on molded rubber badges, Giant Loop branded grab handles that double as side compression straps, a set of 3 RF-welded waterproof inner liner Saddlebag Dry Pods with air purge valves, and drains in the bottoms of the Saddlebag’s “legs” that allow water to escape if it manages to penetrate the highly water resistant out shell (yea, we understand – we’ve dunked our bikes in streams crossings, too!). Made in USA. Backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects.

“The best hard-core saddlebag and tank-bag solution we’ve found is from Giant Loop…. There are cheaper solutions to carrying stuff, but these American-made pieces have been over mountains and across deserts with no issues.” — Cycle World Magazine

The Great Basin Saddlebag Roll Top delivers everything needed to mount up hit the road:

Compare to the original Great Basin Saddlebag.

Expand the Great Basin Saddlebag Roll Top with Giant Loop’s adventure proof packing system:

SPECIFICATIONS
• Weight: 6 lbs with all included components

• Dimensions (fully packed):

56″ – bottom of pannier, across top to bottom of other pannier bucket
Basically the same as before, with a little more “doming” on top due to increased “front to back” distance.

10″ – height of bag in top center
Again, the difference here is mostly a result of the “front to back” measurement below allowing the top to arc more when stuffed full.

6″ – distance from inside to outside of pannier bucket bottom
This dimension didn’t change – I think this is simply a more accurate measurement taken at very bottom of the “leg.”

14″ – front to back in top center
This is where/why we picked up an additional 10 liters of volume (60 vs. 50), by adding nearly 2″ in this plane. No change in the way the bag mounts or rides, just a bit roomier for sleeping bags and other lightweight, bulky gear in the top.

Materials
• Outer shell: 22 oz. vinyl coated polyester reinforced with ballistic nylon
• Military-spec fasteners
• Custom-woven ballistic webbing on lower anchor straps
• Nylike webbing compression straps

How to Use Giant Loop’s Stainless Steel Mounts and Metal Tri-Glide Buckles

By | Blog, Dry Bags, FAQ, Fitment, Giant Loop Gear, New Product, Snow, Tech Tips, under $60, Video | No Comments

How to Use Giant Loop’s Stainless Steel Mounts and Metal Tri-Glide Buckles

Here’s a simple trick to make it virtually impossible for webbing anchor straps to slip out of stainless steel Giant Loop Mounts, even if you forget to tighten straps (we know, “it” happens). By threading a metal tri-glide buckle onto the webbing anchor straps on Giant Loop’s Revelstoke Tunnel Bag, Torngat Tunnel Bag or Giant Loop’s adventure proof motorcycle gear, such as Saddlebags and Panniers, you can create a dead solid, secure anchor point that also functions as a “quick release.” Thank you for choosing Giant Loop for all of your adventures! #golightgofastgofar

How to Pack a Small Motorcycle for BIG Adventure: Globe Crosser Steph Jeavons + Rhonda the Honda CRF250

How to Pack a Small Motorcycle for BIG Adventure: Globe Crosser Steph Jeavons + Rhonda the Honda CRF250

“Oh my goodness! All packed up. Its been so long I nearly forgot how to do it! Time to move on again!” – Steph Jeavons, One Steph Beyond

Nearly a year ago, Giant Loop hosted world traveler Steph Jeavons here in Bend, Oregon for an evening slideshow of her travels on Rhonda the Honda CRF250L. While she was here we had the opportunity to upgrade her luggage and gear for another round of travel. Packing all of the essentials for months of living off a motorcycle presents challenges – especially with a relatively small bike like the Honda CRF250L. Small bikes are a specialty here at Giant Loop, and by using our modular, customizable adventure proof packing system, we were able to help Steph organize her gear into multiple small compartments, providing quick, easy access – and helping balance the load on both the front and rear of the bike.

Here’s how Steph Jeavons packs her Honda CRF250L the “go light, go fast, go far” Giant Loop way:

TAIL OF HONDA CRF250L
* Great Basin Saddlebag: Fits virtually any motorcycle built to carry a passenger, anchoring to the passenger pegs and riding on the passenger seat.
* 2 x Possibles Pouches: Tool, tubes and other gear kept handy with external pockets designed to integrate with Giant Loop’s Great Basin, Coyote and MoJavi Saddlebags – and used independently as universal tool and gear pouches.
* Columbia Dry Bag: A large bag for a small bike, but Giant Loop’s double-ended Dry Bags come in three sizes for all bike types and packing options.

FRONT OF HONDA CRF250L
* Fandango Pro Tank Bag: Roomy enough for cameras and essential gear, trim enough for off-road riding while standing on the foot pegs.
* Pannier Pockets: Integrate with Giant Loop’s Tank Bag Harness – and can be used independently – to extend gear carry capacity to the front of the bike.
* Fender Bag: A spare tube or other relatively small, lightweight essential strap onto the plastic fenders of most dirt bikes – and Giant Loop’s Fender Bag stays on, even in the roughest riding.

Giant Loop Rider Steph-Jeavons's Honda CRF250L packed for 'round the world adventure with Giant Loop's adventure proof packing systems and gear.

Video: What can you fit into Giant Loop’s Zigzag Handlebar Bag?

Great video by Adventure-Spec, Giant Loop’s importer in the United Kingdom. What do you fit in your Zigzag Handlebar Bag?

The Zigzag Handlebar Bag is one of our most versatile designs, it straps to any solid mount point – snowmobile bumper, snow bike rail, backpack strap, subframe tubes, luggage and tail racks. Works great on mountain bikes too!

Customer Review: “Can’t Sing Enough Praises” About Coyote Saddlebag + Buckin’ Roll Tank Bag on Suzuki DRZ400

Customer Review: “Can’t Sing Enough Praises” About Coyote Saddlebag + Buckin’ Roll Tank Bag on Suzuki DRZ400

Customer post on Adventure Rider:

“I am about to make a bold statement.”

“I finally got a chance to camp with my new Coyote Roll Top Saddlebag and Buckin’ Roll Tank Bag. It’s easily the best setup I have ever owned for dual sport and I’ve damn near owned them all at this point. Can’t wait to see where you guys go with your items in the future. I can say, please keep making roll tops, and please keep the current dry bags. Really awesome features in my opinion. I noticed all the straps are about as twice as thick as any other brand I have used as well. I beat my bike to death and none of this stuff ever moved. The saddlebags already have a few drops on them and I ran into a tree with the right side too. Can’t even see a mark on it anywhere. I also noticed I can put the saddlebags super far back. I never noticed it touching my butt or back the entire time, even riding whoops standing up, and this is with a hydration pack on. This is probably the first time I’ve camped with a setup and didn’t come home not liking something about it. Seriously, can’t sing enough praises.

“In these photos, I am packed with everything needed to tent camp basically indefinitely off the bike. I love that everything is in one place and not in 3 or 4 different bags strapped awkwardly on the back of the bike. Very clean.”

Giant Loop Rider: World Traveler Steph Jeavons on Honda CRF250L with Great Basin Saddlebag, Fandango Pro Tank Bag and Adventure Proof Motorcycle Soft Luggage

Message from Steph Jeavons: “Still loving the Giant Loop luggage😀”

Steph Jeavons has taken her Honda CRF250L further than any 250cc has been before, so far having ridden to 40 countries and covered over 55,000 miles! In March, we hosted her slide show presentation and her bike Rhonda here in Bend, Oregon. While she was here, Giant Loop had the opportunity to lighten her motorcycle and upgrade Rhonda the Honda CRF250L with our waterproof, adventure proof motorcycle soft luggage packing system: Great Basin Saddlebag, Tillamook Dry Bag, Fandango Pro Tank Bag, Possibles Pouches, Pannier Pockets and Pronghorn Straps. Go light! Go fast! Go Far!

Steph Jeavons on Honda CRF250L with Great Basin Saddlebag, Fandango Pro Tank Bag, Pannier Pockets, Tillamook Dry Bag

From her website and blog:
Steph Jeavons set off from the Ace Cafe in 2014 to circumnavigate the world. She is still going, and apparently, happily lost!

Steph has been around motorbikes most of her life with both parents and one of her two sisters riding as well. Her grandmother even rode bikes during the war! Steph herself has been riding since the age of 21. I think you can safely say it’s in the blood. In 2008 she set up her own off-road motorcycle school in the UK as well as desert tours in Morocco alongside the British Dakar rider Mick Extance.

Steph has ridden across the Atlas mountains and in the Sahara five times. She has crossed the US coast-to-coast four times, got muddy in Wales with names like John McGuinness and, just once, nearly punched Carl Fogarty in the face! Steph also worked with Nick Sanders setting up his expedition centre in Machynlleth.

She left all this excitement behind to pursue her dream of riding her motorcycle to all seven continents – solo!

‘I’m certainly no expert and I don’t confess to being a demon on two wheels. This adventure isn’t about speed. It’s not really even about the bike. It’s about living, learning and enjoying! Doing this trip solo on a bike just opens up all the senses and allows me to be part of my environment.’

Steph has taken her Honda CRF250L further than any 250cc has been before, so far having ridden to 40 countries and covered over 55,000 miles! Customer review: Giant Loop’s Roll Top Saddlebags “In A Class Of Their Own”

Customer post in our Vendor thread on Adventure Rider: “I just want to say you guys have hit a home run with the roll top design. The new internal pods with the air valves are amazing. This thing is so well made and In my opinion much more convenient than the zippered design I owned before, but I have always been a roll top kind of guy. Have loved Wolfman products for a while and wouldn’t buy anything else, but to me this bag is in a class of its own. I really hope GL continues to produce roll top bags and refine the designs. My Buckin Roll and the Coyote holds everything I need for a few days out on my DRZ400S. I’d also like to add, and this is important. I have soooooo much more butt room on the bike using your bags than any others bags out there right now! Thank you GL.”

When Rox Speed FX owner Chris took his new Honda Africa Twin for an adventure motorcycle tour this past summer, he chose Giant Loop’s Fandango Pro Tank Bag and Great Basin Saddlebag for his trip – and he sent us some great pics! You’ll notice that the large passenger handles on the Honda Africa Twin create a space between the pillion seat and the bottom or the Great Basin Saddlebag – a perfect spot to stow away an extra layer or additional riding gear.

GL Rider David Darcy Recaps His “Giant Loop Experience” After Multiple International Motorcycle Adventures Since 2012

MY GIANT LOOP EXPERIENCE
If you’re thinking of doing that big adventure, one of the first decisions you are going to have to make is, are you going to use hard of soft luggage?  When I started adventure riding I initially chose aluminium panniers as I thought they would offer better theft prevention, be laster longing,  and offer protection for gear in the event of a crash.  Within about year all of those preconceptions had been smashed,  literally.  During a ride one of the pannier lids fell off and before I could retrieve it, it had been run over by a truck.  Within a month I had a decent crash and completely destroyed one pannier.  During a crossing of the Simpson Desert I found that the hard panniers would smash the backs of my legs in tough sand going with the potential of me being seriously injured.

LONDON TO SYDNEY, 2012
In 2012, when preparing for our London to Sydney motorcycle adventure on KTM 690s my riding partner, Darren Higginson and I, made a decision to go with Giant Loop soft luggage.   We chose the Great Basin Saddle Bag, a Fandango Tank Bag and two dry bags.   We didn’t know it at the time, but this Giant Loop set up was a fantastic balance between luggage capacity and the need to keep luggage weight low.  The Great Basin was also well away from the rear of the foot pegs with little chance of injuring a riders legs if their feet were pushed back from the foot pegs. The GL gear held up for the 18,000 kilometre trip, with nothing breaking.  In fact when I returned to Australia, I gave my Great Basin and Fandango Tank Bag to a friend, who still uses it to this day.  Giant Loop products are made from a tough material that resists chaffing and deformation.  Last year I came off at around 60 kilometres per hour on a slippery muddy dirt road and the gear took the slide without any damage.

PIC 1: Over looking a valley in Kyrgyzstan with some of the best adventure riding in the world before us. My Giant Loop soft luggage set up for the London to Sydney ride; a Fandango Tank Bag, Great Basin Saddle Bag, and a couple of dry bags.

When I returned to Australia I took on a number of big adventures including an unassisted west east crossing of the Simpson Desert,  later a south north crossing of the Simpson,  a numerous other adventures that clocked up thousands of kilometres including riding the South Island of New Zealand.  For these trips I changed to a set of Giant Loop Siskiyou Panniers.  I found the Siskiyou Panniers allowed me to lower and centralise weight distribution which greatly assisted riding in desert sand.  They also fitted perfectly with my Rally Raid Pannier Racks.  I upgraded to a Fandango Pro Tank bag as it allowed to more easily charge cameras in the tank bag.  I’ve alternated between a Tillamook and Rogue Dry bag.  The dry bags have been amazingly useful due to them being double ended.  If packed in a thoughtful way the bags allow you to very quickly access those things that are important, like warm layers,  tools, or some well earned food.   I generally keep food and clothes one end and spares and tools the other.

Earlier this year I rode 17,000 kilometres in Russia from Samara to Magadan via the Road of Bones on a KTM990.   The bike was waiting for me in Russia for this trip and I flew in with my Siskiyou Panniers, a Fandango Pro Tank bag, and the incredibly useful Columbia Dry Bag as I knew they would fit on the bike and give me what I needed in what I knew would be a challenging environment.  The trip was tough, with thick clouds of dust,  hundreds of kilometres of mud and days of riding in constant rain.  When I finally reached Magadan, I jet washed the bags with my gear in them, and not one drop of water, dust or mud had entered the panniers.  During that ride I came off at speed on a concrete bridge covered in slippery clay.  As accidents go it was at the fair to medium end of the spectrum and the bike slid along the concrete bridge for a number of metres.  Apart from one Siskiyou pannier being slightly scuffed there was no damage.

HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS, KASHMIR, INDIA, 2016
I’m just back from riding the Himalayan Mountains in Kashmir India.  For this ride my mate, Nugget and I rented bikes and we had to pack really light.  I chose to go with my Columbia Dry Bag and Fandango Pro Tank Bag,  that fitted perfectly on my Bajaj 220 cc Pulsar road bike.   Nugget rode the new Enfield Himalaya and he took a Great Basin saddle bag and Fandango Tank Bag.   As expected the GL soft luggage didn’t let us down,  kept our gear dry and dust free.  It was the ideal soft luggage set up for this ride.

The Dust 2 Dawson Motorcycle Ride (Not a Rally!) is an annual event which invites motorcycle enthusiasts from across the world to get together and celebrate in Dawson City, Yukon.

Since 1992, old friends and new have been getting together over a common bond: motorcycles. The D2D weekend consists of motorcycle games on unpaved streets of Dawson, a poker run in the historic goldfields, and a banquet full of delicious food, crisp Canadian beer, and a whole lot of fun!

“Because Dawson City is located at the junction of three iconic highways: the Top of the World/Taylor Highways, the North Klondike Highway and the Dempster Highway, you’ll have plenty of options to do some epic riding.”

Check out their Facebook page to get information on next year’s D2D ride.

Giant Loop is proud to have donated to this event which benefits the Dawson Shelter Society, the Dawson Women’s Shelter,  the Healthy Babies, Healthy Moms program, and the Dawson City Fire Fighter Association.

Giant Loop Customers ‘Ride the Divide’

Giant Loop Customers ‘Ride the Divide’

img007 (1)

Giant Loop customers, Brian Shaney and Dave Wenk, have been featured in Road Runner Magazine’s September/October issue. The two took on the ultimate challenge to ride the Continental Divide on a Honda XR650L and a Suzuki DR-Z400S. They started in northern Montana and will ultimately end at the Mexican border. Stage One, featured in this article saw them launching the trip in Eureka, MT and finishing in Rawlins, Wyoming.  They navigated the Montana back country, rode along Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, made friends with lizards, got their bones shaken by intense washboard gravel, visited a ghost town, and carved through herds of cattle, all in only the first three states of the trip.
Brian and Dave’s bikes are equipped with Giant Loop’s Coyote Saddlebag and Great Basin Saddlebag. Knowing that if they were going to on a hardcore journey like this, they needed some hardcore gear. Both bags are wrap around saddlebags that are waterproof and have 39-60 liters of carrying capacity respectivly. Rugged gear for rugged back road trips. This kind of trip is exactly what these bags were designed for, and we’re thrilled to see them trusted on such an epic adventure.

No matter where you’re going next, go light, go fast, go far.

Video: Customer Stoked On Rally Raid Honda CB500X Adventure

Happy customer, Charles, sent us a kind email explaining how thrilled he is with his Rally Raid Honda CB500X Adventure with Level 3 Kit and Rally Raid Products luggage racks and other Honda CB500 parts and accessories, including the Engine Guard, ADV Foot Pegs and Side Luggage Racks.

Charles was among Giant Loop’s first customers for the Rally Raid Honda CB500X Adventure Level 3 motorcycle build and decided to put his dual sporty adventure twin together at Piston & Chain, San Francisco’s Community Motorcycle Garage. Shout out to the Piston & Chain wrenches who helped Charles with parts of the Rally Raid build.

After completing his Rally Raid Honda CB500X Adventure, Charles visited Giant Loop at the Horizons Unlimited California Travelers Meeting last year, where he proudly showed off his bike — and he picked up a set of Giant Loop motorcycle soft luggage for his adventure touring, including the Siskiyou Panniers on his bike here.

Charles and his buddy went on a weekend trip and took the bike along: “It is a delight to ride. I could almost keep up with Ohad on his mighty 1200GS for this weekend’s remote-as-f**k trails and Hwy1 carving in Mendocino and Humboldt.”

Thanks Charles, we’re glad you’re enjoying your Rally Raid Honda CB500X Adventure!
