Meet Greg Samborski:
I’m riding my kids’ BMX up a steep hill in Bella Coola, BC, making “vroom vroom” sounds with my mouth as I imagine the sensation of an engine effortlessly pushing me forward. That’s my earliest memory of yearning for a motorbike. I was about four at the time. It would be another decade-and-a-half before I got my first motorcycle, a used 81 GS550 Suzuki – I had to buy it in secret… with my first student loan.
I racked up the kilometres all year round because the 550, and later a DRZ 400S, were my only source of transportation during post secondary. When I ventured out to backpack, and shortly thereafter work abroad, my unwavering loyalty to motorbikes stayed strong until my fist-born broke my decade long two-wheeled streak. (Actually it wasn’t really her fault – She wasn’t the one asking for a “safer”, more “comfortable”, “practical” transportation.)
I’ve been fortunate to ride two-wheeled contraptions around Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, The Philippines, Vietnam, China, Korea, Mongolia, Russia, Bali, Switzerland, Germany, France, Mexico, Canada and the USA.
The only thing I love as much as riding is photography. I made it my profession 15 years ago and am happiest when motorcycles, cameras and drones combine. In the beginning I strived to communicate what drew me to riding – now I try and share why others ride via my Bike & Rider Project, a series of photo essays showcasing the eclectic characters in our two-wheeled community. While I will take any and every opportunity to ride a different bike, the one that stole my heart is a 2012 KTM 500 EXC.
My current goal is to basically become “Claudio” from Long Way Round, and document off-road motorcycle adventures full-time. This dream is slowly becoming a reality as I prepare for a 2023 filled with even more moto-adventures
When not trying to keep up with the two strokes in local hare scrambles and photographing motorbikes in unusual locations, I can be found on Vancouver Island dadding, stir-frying, and learning to drum.
