How We Measure Packable Volume at Giant Loop

Ever wondered how Giant Loop calculates the storage capacity of our products? A customer recently wrote to Giant Loop asking us about the packable volume of a piece of Giant Loop gear. He was using linear dimensions to calculate the volume and kept coming up with a different result than what we state on the Giant Loop website. Here’s why: linear dimensions give you the volume of a rigid object — as opposed to flexible objects, like Giant Loop Soft Luggage, that bulge and conform to their contents. That’s why, several years ago we standardized our packable volume measurement method. And here’s how we do it! Giant Loop measures the volume of our products by filling them with dried pinto beans and calculating the total using a 2 Liter scoop. Holy frijoles! The method works great. Check out this video from a few years ago that illustrates the process…

We go to great lengths to provide accurate detailed information about all of Giant Loop’s packing systems and gear. If you don’t see what you’re looking for on our website — let us know, so we can fill in any missing details. Thanks!
